Zagreb is the capital of Croatia. It is a city with a stormy history and it is the country’s economic, political and cultural centre. The Medvedica mountain loos over the city and it is a popular place for tourists to visit. Originally the city was formed out of two settlements on adjacent hills, the Gradec and the Kaptol, which grew together to form the city’s core today.

The Upper Town of Zagreb (the old part of Zagreb) has the tradition of lighting the street lamps illuminating the streets of the Old City every evening. If you go for a walk through the city you can relax and sit on a bench next to the statue of the poet Antun Gustav Matoš (1875-1914), who used to sit there and look downhill upon his beloved city. The best thing about Zagreb is that its Old Town can be discovered on foot in one evening.

There are many museums, galleries and other buildings and places with interesting history you can visit with your children while in Zagreb. A good place to visit with you baby is the Botanical Garden, the Mimara museum or the Museum of Illusion.

The ZET, a funicular operated by the city, is part of the city’s transportation system. There are also 15 tramlines, 4 of which are operated at night time. Zagreb does not have a metro.
