Berlin, the capital of Germany, suffered extensive damages during World War II and many parts of the city have thus been built after the war. Nonetheless you can find many (restored) monuments and historical buildings in Berlin. The city has countless faces and offers something for every taste, so worry not – you and your little ones will not get bored during your time in Berlin.
The most famous sights in the city are the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag Parliament building, the East Side Gallery with the remnants of the Berlin Wall, the Alexander Platz with its TV tower, the Jewish Memorial, the Berlin Cathedral, the Checkpoint Charlie, the Gendarmenmarkt market square with its two churches and the Opera House, the Bellevue Palace, several museums and many more. You can explore the city by yourself on foot or go one of the cities numerous tours.
For some fun time with your kids visit the Berlin Zoo, the Berlin Aquarium, the Madame Tussaudes wax replica museum, the Jump House Trampoline Park, the Planetarium, the Botanical Gardens, the Children’s Labyrinth Museum, the Babelsberg Filmpark, to name but a few…And when you are tired from sightseeing relax in one of Berlin’s many parks, e.g. the Tiergarten, the Mauerpark, the Tempelhoferfeld or Kleistpark.
Getting around Berlin by public transportation is easy. There are many bus, tram, subway (U-Bahn) and train (S-Bahn) lines taking you anywhere you need to go. Most S-Bahn stations have elevators and are barrier free, but quite a few subway stations are only equipped with stairs, however usually passers-by will readily offer you a hand carrying your buggy up the stairs. If possible avoid taking the busses during rush hours. Entering (and exiting) them with a buggy can be frustrating because they are so full of people.
There are both cobblestoned and smooth pavements, but overall Berlin is fairly barrier free compared to other European capitals.
