Bern, the capital of Switzerland with its UNESCO city centre was built on a peninsula surrounded by the river Aare. All main sights in the city are easily accessible on foot, not taking up more than half a day to see everything, however the cobble stoned streets might make a buggy trip slightly bumpy

Thanks to 6 kilometres of arcades, the old town boasts one of the longest covered shopping promenades in Europe. It is recommended to visit the Zytglogge ("Time Bell"), an elaborate medieval clock tower with moving puppets. The Münster, a 15th century Gothic cathedral, offers a climb to its lookout tower, though it is not possible to go up with a buggy. Since the 16th century, the city has had a bear pit, the Bärengraben and the Federal Palace (Bundeshaus) with its fountain in front of it promises children a refreshing shower on hot summer’s days. The Creaviva Kindermuseum provides much painting fun for older children.

The canton of Bern offers many activities for the whole family. Visit the Emmental valley with its cheese factories, the Oberland area for some sports fun or Lautenbrunnen for a nice hike.

Even though Bern has its own airport, it is more comfortable to take the one hour’s train ride from the Zurich or Basel airports.
