Bogotá, is the third highest altitude capital in South America, so be prepared for some fresh air. Generally this metropole is very baby friendly but like any other major city in South America, Bogota has some very safe and expensive quarters and of course few neighbourhoods you want to avoid.
Visit La Candelaria, the historical part of Bogota or Usaquen, a colonial landmark with many cafés and regular flea market. Spend some time in La Quinta de Bolivar observatory, the Maloka planetarium or the observation point of La Calera or to have some fun, visit the amusement parks Salitre Magico or Mundo Aventura. Bogota has numerous green parks and beautiful botanical gardens of Jose Celestion Mutis or hike in one of the green areas surrounding Bogota. In the eastern mountains visit the Quebrada La vieja and Chapinero Waterfalls.
In past decade, moving around Bogota has changed quite a lot. As the government made some car use restrictions (driving only with certain licence plate on specific dates), locals are being encouraged to use public transport more and more, new cycling routes have been built and pedestrian areas have been enlarged. On Sundays, from 7am – 2pm, all major highways are closed to encourage people to enjoy the city by bike. This “healthy habit” is called Ciclovia and it’s highly recommended to try it. Nevertheless using public transport, bus or metro network, is quite difficult with a buggy and same goes for taxis. Buses are divided according to their size for Bus (large buses), Buseta (medium size buses) and Colectivo (vans or minivans).
Walking your buggy might be bit tricky because of poorly maintained and broken sidewalks. The taxi drivers mostly don’t possess baby car seats and you probably won’t carry one with you all the time. So easiest but not the safest is just to hold your baby on your lap or buy cheaply a second hand baby car seat.
If you plan your visit, we encourage to avoid beginning of July when around 400k rock fans are partying at the Rock festival (Rock al Parque).
