Stockholm, the capital and largest city of Sweden, is made up of 14 islands and it connects the Baltic Sea archipelago with more than 50 bridges. The city is rich in history and an absolute must-see when visiting the Nordic countries. Whether you visit in summer or in winter there will always be plenty of things to see and do with your little ones.
The main sights in Stockholm include the Stockholm Palace – the royal palace and museum, the Gamla Stan (old town) with its impressive old buildings, the Storkyrkan Cathedran built in the 13th century, the Drottninholm Palace with its gardens, the Stockholm City Hall, the Djurgården park, the Skansen – an open-air museum with a farmstead and a zoo, the Vasa – a maritime museum with a 17th century ship, the Nobel Museum with everything related to the Nobel Price and the Nordic Museum.
A must-do when travelling with children is the Gröna Lund theme park with rides and live shows. You can also visit the Stockholm Spelmuseum – the museum of video games, the Junibacken Story Train introducing you to the fairy tail world of Astrid Lindgren, the Swedish Museum of Natural History and Cosmonova, the Royal Armory bringing history to life for children or the MegaMind Science and Technology Museum for children. In summer you can also spend some nice relaxation time in one of Stockholm’s many beautiful parks or take a boat ride to one of the many surrounding island.
Stockholm is a baby-friendly city with baby-changing tables in most places. The people are friendly and will readily help you if you are in need of it. Most people are fully fluent in English, so you need not worry about language issues. The new part of Stockholm is mostly barrier-free, with even pavement, but getting around the Old Town with its cobblestoned streets can be a bit challenging with a stroller, thus for a visit here it is advisable to use a baby carrier.
You can get around the city by bus, tram, local trains or the subway system. Taking the subway in Stockholm can be a interesting experience because every station is part of a city-wide subway art program. Every station has some sort of art and you can even take a guided subway station tour of you would like to know more about the exhibits.
Stockholm has an international airport. You can take one of the bus lines or a taxi to the city from the airport.
